How Do I Identify a German Cockroach?

Written by PestMan Editorial TeamTechnical review pendingPublished Updated

Quick answer

German cockroaches are small, 10–15 mm long, light tan to brown, with two dark parallel stripes on the shield just behind the head. They are usually found indoors in kitchens and bathrooms, often in groups. Females may carry a light-brown egg case at the tip of the abdomen, and nymphs are dark with a pale central stripe.

Why this happens

Identification matters because German cockroaches behave differently from large outdoor cockroaches. They breed indoors, spread on belongings and usually need a different management approach.

The most common confusion is with young nymphs of larger species. Large-species nymphs lack the two distinct stripes behind the head and are usually found near drains, sub-floors or outdoors.

What you may be seeing

  • Two dark stripes behind the head (the clearest feature).
  • Many small cockroaches rather than one large one.
  • Activity around the fridge, dishwasher, oven and sink.

What you can do

  • Catch one on a sticky trap or in a jar and compare it with the German cockroach species page.
  • Note where you found it; this helps target cleaning and treatment.
  • Start the kitchen hygiene and sealing steps straight away.

When professional help may be needed

If you confirm German cockroaches, particularly with nymphs present, professional treatment is often the most reliable path to elimination.
