What Pests Are Common in Queensland Homes?
Quick answer
Queensland homes commonly deal with cockroaches, ants (including ghost ants and coastal brown ants), mosquitoes, spiders, rats and mice, silverfish, fleas and termites. Warm temperatures across most of the state mean long pest seasons. North Queensland adds tropical pests and dengue-mosquito risk, and South East Queensland has fire ant biosecurity zones.
Why this happens
Queensland’s climate ranges from subtropical in the south-east to tropical in the north, both favouring insects.
Raised timber homes, large gardens and proximity to bushland, creeks and coast all add pest pressure.
Red imported fire ants are present in parts of South East Queensland and must be reported.
What you can do
- Learn to recognise fire ants and report suspected nests to the National Fire Ant Eradication Program.
- Manage water around the home to reduce mosquitoes.
- Schedule regular termite inspections.
- See location pages for Brisbane and Queensland.
When professional help may be needed
Queensland’s long pest season makes periodic professional inspections common, particularly for termites.

Ants
Social insects that live in colonies and follow scent trails to food and water. Most ant problems in homes are nuisance foraging trails from colonies outside the house.
