Mosquitoes in Brisbane

Updated 20 September 2026
Two kinds of mosquito problem
- Backyard (container) mosquitoes breed in pots, gutters and containers on your property — you can control these.
- Saltmarsh and floodwater mosquitoes breed in large numbers in coastal wetlands after tides and rain and can fly long distances — Brisbane City Council manages major breeding areas.
Health
Ross River virus is the most commonly reported mosquito-borne disease in Queensland. Protect yourself with repellent, clothing and screens, especially at dawn and dusk.
